Arrange the blocks in any design that you like, either symmetrically or randomly. It may help to lay them out on a bed or on the floor. 2 For the small quilt, sew the blocks into three rows of five blocks. For the twin quilt, sew the blocks into eight rows of seven blocks. Press seam allowances of even-numbered rows in one direction; press seam allowances of odd-numbered rows in the opposite direction. Sew the rows together to complete the quilt top. 3 Carefully press and square off the quilt top, and prepare the backing and batting.
Place Unit 1A right-side-down on this strip set so that the Fabric 2 piece is at the top. With the right-hand raw edges aligned, sew the unit to the strip. Sew all the Unit 1A pieces to the strip sets in this way. 5 Press the seam allowances toward the Fabric 3 strip. Cut the sections apart at the edges of the units, lining up the seams with your ruler. This is now Block A. Press. Each block should measure 8½” × 12½” (22cm × 32cm). Make ten A blocks for the small quilt or thirty for the twin quilt.
SEWING ROWS TOGETHER As you put together your rows of blocks, pinning can be very helpful for lining up seams. Although there are no points to match in the construction of the blocks in these quilts, you may want to accurately piece where the blocks come together from one row to the next. This requires a pin—and only one pin—per intersection. When sewing the rows of blocks together, press the seam allowances on the odd-numbered rows in one direction and the even-numbered rows in the other. This ensures that the seam allowances will interlock when the rows are placed right sides together for sewing.
